Nonylphenol in the Environment : A Critical Review
نویسنده
چکیده
Nonylphenol (NP), an anaerobic breakdown product of a widely used nonionic surfactant nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPEO), is currently of environmental concern because of its toxicity, estrogenic properties and widespread contamination. Nonylphenol has been detected in surface and ground water, sediments, aquatic organisms, wastewater effluent, air, and human food. Although concentrations of NP are typically low, the potential risk to human populations and ecosystems at these concentrations is still unclear and is a topic of considerable debate. A better understanding of the fate and transport of NP and its parent compound, NPEO, is needed for determining the associated risk to the environment and human health posed by these compounds. This paper presents a critical review of the literature and issues related to NP in the environment, including the associated gaps, conflicts and research needs in this area. The similarities and differences between NP and historical contaminants of interest such as PCBs and current contaminants such as pharmaceuticals are noted, as is the need for analyzing the life cycle of chemicals in the environment prior to widespread use. Finally, issues of risk and how these guide policy as related to NP are discussed.

Nonylphenol, an Integrated Vision of a Pollutant. Scientific Review
Nonylphenol is a metabolic intermediate from the microbial transformation of detergents used worldwide. While nonylphenol shows some acute toxicity, it is also able to mimic important hormones resulting in the disruption of several processes by interfering with the signals that control the overall physiology of the organism. This work perform a critical reviews on the origin, environmental fate...
متن کاملNonylphenol: Properties, legislation, toxicity and determination.
This paper aims to gather and discuss important information about nonylphenol, such as physical chemistry properties, toxicity and analytical methods in various matrices. As a degradation product of ethoxylated alkylphenols, nonylphenol presents a higher degree of reactivity than its precursor. Due to its harmful effects on the environment, use and production of nonylphenol has been banned in E...
متن کاملAUTHOR: R. JAMES MAGUIRE TITLE: Review of the Persistence of Nonylphenol and Nonylphenol Ethoxylates in Aquatic Environments
Alkylphenol ethoxylates, in particular nonylphenol ethoxylates, are widely used nonionic surfactants that are discharged in high quantities to sewage treatment plants and directly to the environment in areas where there is no sewage or industrial waste treatment. This article reviews the treatability of nonylphenol ethoxylates and nonylphenol in sewage treatment plants and their persistence in ...

Background: Despite that has passed decades from sustainability issues, but we are still seeing that farmers misuse the sources of production, and agricultural policies do not fit with the environmental capacity of regions and being brilliant of the term self-sufficiency in among agricultural development policies. It seems all the levers so far have been used to achieve sustainability so should...
متن کاملAssessing the sensitivity of Caspian Kutum (Rutilus kutum) and the endangered Caspian trout (Salmo trutta caspius) to acute toxicity of nonylphenol
Toxicity tests are commonly used as a tool to determine the standards of water quality for chemicals and to discover appropriate organisms as bioindicators in toxicological studies, and also could be used as an essential tool for evaluation of the pollutant effects in aquatic ecosystems. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sensitivity of two Caspian fish species, Caspian trout as a...
